Game 1 In a game at Three Rivers Stadium the Montreal Expos got by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 10 innings by the score of 5 to 2.
The score was tied at 2 after nine. Montreal won it in the 10th inning. Delino Deshields led off and got things going when he drew a walk. Dave Gallagher came next and he hit a single. Spike Owen then reached on an error. After an out was recorded, Mike Felder came up and he drew a walk. Andres Galarraga came up to bat and slapped a base-hit. One out later, Larry Walker followed, but he was set down on strikes. Montreal rapped out 7 hits for the night.
The win went to Jamie Moyer (3-1) who allowed no runs in 1 inning. Scott Ruskin earned his 13th save. The losing pitcher was Clay Parker (3-3) in relief. He was not very effective, surrendering 3 runs in 2 and 1/3 innings. Game 2 Center fielder Oddibe McDowell lofted one into the 'cheap seats' and had 2 RBI and Dave Lapoint delivered 7 solid innings as the Montreal Expos defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 5 to 1 at Three Rivers Stadium.
Lapoint (2-11) pitched a solid game. He allowed 4 hits and no walks in 7 innings seeing his ERA drop from 4.96 to 4.75. Montreal finished with 11 hits while Pittsburgh ended up with 5.
Lapoint got help from Mel Rojas who was credited with his 1st save. Kevin Gross (1-3) ended up with the loss. He got hit hard, allowing 9 hits and 4 walks in 5 innings. Game 3 Right fielder Kevin Bass smashed 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI as the Montreal Expos defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 6 to 5 at Three Rivers Stadium.
Bass was unconscious out there. While Pittsburgh pitching was serving softballs up there for him to hit, the Pittsburgh fans were serving up some hardball barbs when he entered the batter's box. But he just used it as fuel for the fire. He cracked a two-run shot in the 4th inning, smacked a three-run homer in the 5th inning and laced a single in the 7th inning. Pittsburgh tried unsuccessfully to come back in the 9th.
John Wetteland (5-6) picked up the victory, allowing 4 runs in 6 innings. Scott Ruskin earned the save, his 14th. The loss was charged to Neal Heaton (6-8). He was knocked around pretty good, giving up 6 runs in 5 innings.
'This was a tough loss,' said Mike Mashanic, 'the kind that sticks with you for awhile.' Game 4 In a thrilling finish the Pittsburgh Pirates pulled off the win over the Montreal Expos by a score of 5 to 4 at Three Rivers Stadium.
The game was won by Pittsburgh with a run in the 9th inning. Andy Van Slyke slapped a one-base hit. After an out was recorded, Billy Hatcher came to the plate and reached on an error. Jay Bell then was walked intentionally to load the bases. After another out, Sid Bream came to the plate and drew a walk making Pittsburgh the victor and beginning a joyous home town celebration. Pittsburgh had a total of 10 hits for the game.
The win was credited to Rick Reed (4-1) who went 1 inning allowing no runs. Frank Dipino (0-4) was hit with the loss in relief.
With this win, Pittsburgh has a 65-69 record. They have been 5-5 lately. With the loss Montreal now has a record of 44-94, worst in the division.
