Subject: Reds @ Padres

After a game 1 disaster, the massively underachieving Cincy pitching staff found their groove (temporarily, no doubt) and the offense got back on track....

Game 1: SDN starter Andy Benes does in fact have hits on his card, and the Reds rolled all over it trying unsuccessfully to find them.  Benes allowed just 3 hits and 1 walk in 7 IP, while the Padres batters reached a new low -- in split cards -- and destroyed Greg Swindell and Dwayne Henry.  Final score: 8-2.  Every Padre starter besides Benes had at least one hit and the home team took command early on timely low split-card gophers from noted sluggers such as Harold Reynolds.

=====================================

Game 2: Greg Harris (SDN version) has an even tougher card than Benes but the Cincy offense launched an early attack via John Kruk's 3-run homer in the first and tacked on 3 more homers before the day was done.  Final score: 8-2.  Harris didn't permit a ton of runners (9 in 7 IP) but all the power made those runners easier to score.  Kruk homered again later, as did Darrin Jackson and Chris Sabo.

Scott Scudder (a rare non-underachiever at 3-2, 3.30 now) was almost as unhittable as Benes had been and Norm Charlton wobbled his way to a 3-inning save, his 3rd of 1991.

=====================================

Game 3: History was made today in a couple of ways: Randy Myers tossed the first complete game of his career and came close to his first shutout, scattering 5 hits, walking just 1 and fanning 10 Padres.  Also, Bruce Hurst had a merely mortal outing, allowing 9 baserunners and 4 runs in 7 IP.  Final score: 6-1.

The contest was scoreless until the CIN 5th when Barry Larkin delivered an RBI triple and scored on Mariano Duncan's double.  A Fred McGriff error among 3 other baserunners helped the Reds add 2 more runs in the 6th and although Myers quickly gave one back, he was solid the rest of the way.

=====================================

Game 4: Greg Harris (CIN version) has been the massivest of underachievers so far in 1991, being unaccountably dismembered at nearly every opportunity, especially in road games.  Harris turned it around a little bit today, as he too notched a complete game and a fairly easy 9-1 win against Dennis Rasmussen.

Harris walked nobody and scattered 9 hits as his offense was massing 17 safeties against 3 San Diego hurlers.  Part-timer Ricky Jordan led the attack with 4 hits including his 4th homer, and Harris may have tied a record with 3 successful sac bunts.

Alan
