Clear Day

San Francisco sweeps Pittsburgh at home 3-0......Pirates fall to 2nd place in the NL East....
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

GAME #1:  Ken Reynolds vs Steve Stone

San Francisco takes the opener 4-1 behind the solid pitching of Steve Stone.  Stone allowed 3 hits over 7 innings in picking up his 6th win of the season.  Jim Barr picked up his 2nd save of the season in the win.

The Giants took an early 1-0 lead in the 1st after Tito Fuentes tripled and scored on a Jim Wynn groundout.  San Francisco added 2 more runs in the 2nd on a Bobby Bonds solo homer and a RBI single from Chris Speier.  The Giants went up 4-0 in the 5th as Speier led off with a double and moved to 3rd on a Fuentes single.  First baseman Tom McCraw then booted a grounder scoring Speier.

Pittsburgh's lone run came in the 7th as Milt May drew a bases loaded walk to make it 4-1.  Manny Sanguillen had 2 hits for the Pirates while Speier, Bonds and Dave Rader had 2 hits apiece.  Fuentes chipped in with 3 hits for the Giants.

GAME #2:  Bob Moose vs Clyde Wright

San Francisco scored 7 times in the first 2 innings to take a 9-5 win over Pittsburgh.  Clyde Wright went the distance, despite allowing 15 hits and throwing 142 pitches.  Bob Moose was rocked for 7 runs over 3 innings, allowing 3 homers to the Giant hitters.

San Francisco scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 1st as Lee May hit a 3 run homer.  The Giants added 4 more in the 2nd as Chris Speier hit a 3 run homer and Jim Wynn followed that up with a solo shot.  The Pirates finally got some offense in the middle innings scoring 4 times.  Dave Kingman added another solo homer in the 8th to make it 9-5.

Richie Hebner and Manny Sanguillen had 3 hits for the Pirates.  Speier, May and Kingman had 2 hits for the Giants.  The Pirates undoing was 12 runners stranded in the ballgame.

GAME #3:  Bruce Kison vs Claude Osteen

Claude Osteen went the distance, allowing only 4 hits in a 7-1 San Francisco win.

Pittsburgh finally got the lead in this series in the 2nd as Willie Stargell connected on a solo homer.  Unfortunately the lead didn't last long as the Giants scored 3 in the bottom of the 3rd.  One run scored on a Bruce Kison wild pitch, and then Tito Fuentes connected on a 2 run homer.  San Francisco added 2 more runs in the 4th as Fuentes picked up his 4th RBI of the game with a 2 run single.

Bobby Bonds cracked a solo homer in the 5th to make it 6-1.  Then Osteen rubbed it in in the 8th with a RBI single to close the scoring at 7-1.  Dave Rader also had 3 hits for the Giants.
