Jon Matlack took a no-hitter into the 7th inning at RIVERFRONT STADIUM as the
New York NL Mets beat the Cincinnati Reds by the count of 4 to
1.

Matlack(6-12) pitched one of his finer games as he simply was too much for the
Cincinnati batters. He surrendered only 3 hits and 3 walks in 8 and 2/3
innings. Matlack struckout 10 Cincinnati batters. The left-handed Matlack
lost his chance for a no-hitter when Jerry Grote singled with two outs in the
7th inning. New York NL had 8 hits for the game and Cincinnati had 3.

Tug McGraw got the save, his 7th. Don Gullett(10-5) was the loser. He
pitched 6 innings giving up 7 hits and 2 walks. Alan Boodman was impressed
with Matlack and his 10 strikeouts. 'It's tough to generate runs if you
can't make contact with the ball.'

Don Wilson took a no-hitter into the 6th inning as the Cincinnati Reds beat
the New York NL Mets by a score of 3 to 2.

Wilson(11-1) had a strong outing. He surrendered only 4 hits and 4 walks in 9
innings. The right-handed Wilson lost his chance for a no-hitter when Ben
Oglivie singled with nobody out in the 6th inning. New York NL made it
exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across.

Jerry Koosman(6-5) was given the loss. He surrendered 7 hits and 3 walks in 7
innings. 'We just made a lot of mistakes, mostly mental,' Jon Fellows said.
'It's bad enough when the other team beats you, but when you start beating
yourselves, that's really bad.'

First baseman Tony Perez hit 2 doubles and had 2 RBI at RIVERFRONT STADIUM as
the Cincinnati Reds beat the New York NL Mets 4 to 3.

Tom Seaver(9-7) pitched a fine game. He surrendered 7 hits and 3 walks in 7
and 1/3 innings. New York NL had a chance to come back in the 9th but they
came up short.

Seaver got relief help from Joe Niekro who gained credit for his 7th save.
The loss was charged to Jim Bibby(4-8). He surrendered 3 runs and 10 hits in
6 innings.

Jon Fellows was clearly disappointed after the game. 'It was a manager's
nightmare out there', he said, 'We should have had this one.'
